La letra expresa el descontento del autor con el presente y su anhelo por un antiguo amor llamado Marianne, cuyo recuerdo es evocado fuertemente por una vieja canción familiar. En una entrevista, se le preguntó a Scholz: "¿Quién es Marianne?" Él respondió: "De hecho, hay una Marianne. No era mi novia". Explicó que cuando tenía 8 o 9 años tenía una prima mucho mayor que él pensaba que era la chica más hermosa que había visto en su vida y que estaba "secretamente enamorado" de ella
